Sachsenhausen Concentration
Camp- Oranienburg, Germany
This innocent looking building was actually an entrance to a concentration camp,
on the other side.
It is now a museum. On the gate as you enter is a sign that says 'ARBEIT MACHT
FREI',
which roughly translated means 'Work Will Make You Free'.
This was built in 1936 and from 1936-1945 housed about 200,000 prisoners, about
100,000
which were murdered. I got to visit this place in 1991 and saw the prison cells,
the ovens, the
crematorium, etc. Like many of you, this was something I heard about or saw
only in movies, but after spending a couple of hours in this place I can tell
you
this was no movie and it is something I will never forget.
